Are You Hiring the Agent or the Company?
Buying or selling an Austin home is a huge financial undertaking. For many, this may very well be one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. That can be stressful. Some people believe that they should go with a “name brand” real estate company to get a competitive edge. But that’s not necessarily the case. When it comes to Austin real estate, are you hiring the agent…or the company?
During a recent trip to look at Austin area homes, one of my clients asked me whether I thought that it is more advantageous to go with a large real estate brokerage firm or if an independent company is a better way to go. This is a great question that I am sure many real estate investors have often wondered. In my opinion, you can’t judge a book by its cover and you shouldn’t judge an agent by their company. In other words, just because you may have had a bad experience with a previous agent at some large firm doesn’t mean all agents in that firm operate the same way. On the other hand, a small independent Austin real estate company may not have the huge budget of a larger firm, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get excellent service with fantastic results.
In my 12 years in the real estate industry, I’ve worked for large firms (RE/MAX and JBGoodwin Realtors) and have nothing but praise for the time I’ve spent with them. I decided that it was time for me to open my own independent company and branched out to form Austin Ave Real Estate Company. A lower overhead means I can devote myself to a smaller clientele, allowing me to focus better on their specific needs. I may not have an office filled with dozens of agents that I can bounce ideas off of on a daily basis, but I still meet with other independent brokers, frequently attend area tours and stay on top of local board meetings that keep me informed of all the latest changes in a constantly evolving Austin real estate industry. Besides, I go to wherever my clients need me, be that at their own home, a Starbucks around the corner from their office or picking them up from their hotel when they come into town. An official real estate office isn’t always the ideal location for many hard-working people living a busy lifestyle.
Are you hiring the agent or the company? In my opinion, you’re hiring the agent to represent you in your Austin real estate endeavors. Every agent works differently, even those working under the umbrella of one company name. So, whether you go with a large firm or decide to work with an independent brokerage, just make sure you are comfortable with the person you have representing you. Whether they remember the name of my company or not is fine, as long as my clients are happy with the service I have provided them.
